Franklin County to face Broad Run in semifinals Friday

SONTAG -- Three-time reigning Western Valley District girls' tennis champion Franklin County, a day removed from winning for the first time in school history in the Northwest Region team tournament, will face Cedar Run District Broad Run in the semifinals at the Franklin County Recreation Park.

The match had been slated for Thursday, but has been switched to Friday at 4 p.m.

SONTAG -- Franklin County's Northwest Region girls' tennis match against Albemarle was postponed for a second day Tuesday and reset for today at the Franklin County Recreation Park courts.

Albemarle bested Battlefield, 5-0, in last Friday's first round. The Patriots are the two-time reigning regional champions.

Franklin County's second chance to claim a 2012 Northwest Region tournament berth in baseball is today at W.W. Naff Jr. Field.

But considering the recent unpredictable nature of the Western Valley District's postseason tournament and the fact that the Eagles will likely face George Washington-Danville standout righthander Blake Bivens, the task could be difficult.

Game time at W.W. Naff Jr. Field is 6 p.m.

FERRUM -- With the hiring of Jessica Flanagan as its new volleyball coach, Ferrum College has added to its list of alumni who are in charge of Panthers' intercollegiate athletic teams.

That number stands at six.

Flanagan takes over the post from Nancy Castillo, the coach for whom she played during a standout four-year career as an outside hitter.

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Ferrum College softball players Karly Thompson, Hannah Shumaker, Kaitlyn Culler and Rachel Shumaker have earned All-Atlantic Region accolades for the 2012 season by a vote of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Thompson, a sophomore, and Hannah Shumaker, a senior, garnered first-team laurels, while Culler and Rachel Shumaker, both juniors received third-team honors.

HENRY-- Wilmington (N.C.) District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Fishing Tournament Facility at Twin Ridge Marina on the Franklin County side of Philpott Lake Saturday.

The event was held in conjunction with the Fishers of Men Legacy youth tournament to celebrate efforts to reconnect youth with the outdoors.

Tim Campbell, tournament coordinator, thanked the partners for the great new facility that will meet the needs of fishing tournaments on Philpott Lake.

The Franklin County Sandlot Football Association will begin its 16th year with sign-ups this month and in June for the 2012 season, which begins with practice Wednesday, August 1.

County youth can register for play in four leagues: instructional, pee-wee, little and junior.

The sign-up dates and times are Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Thursday, May 24 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m; Tuesday, May 29 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.;Thursday, June 7 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

All sign-ups will take place at the Commonwealth Building on South Main Street in Rocky Mount.

Eagles game is switched to today

ROANOKE -- Franklin County's Western Valley District softball tournament semifinal-round game against Patrick Henry was postponed Tuesday because of inclement weather and rescheduled for today.

Game time at PH is 5:30 p.m.

The Patriots enter the contest as the No. 2 seed, while the Eagles (12-8) are the No. 3 seed.

WVD track and field meet is today

ROANOKE -- The Western Valley District will crown its champions in boys' and girls' outdoor track and field when the league holds its postseason meet Thursday at William Fleming High School.

William Fleming is hosting the event for the second year in a row.

The meet begins at 2 p..m.

Participating schools are Franklin County, William Fleming, Patrick Henry and Halifax County.

SOUTH BOSTON -- Paced by the hitting of Megan Hodges and Kameron Cundiff, Franklin County's junior varsity softball team completed a perfect Western Valley District campaign last week with a 13-6 triumph over Halifax County.

The Eagles' victory over the Comets is their second this season.

Cundiff belted two home runs for FCHS (4-0 in the WVD, 12-5 overall) -- a two-run shot during a five-run Eagles' third and a two-run blast that accounted for both of FCHS's runs in the sixth.

Hodges hit a home run during the Eagles' four-run fourth frame.

Gillespie takes FCS Late Model checkered

CALLAWAY -- Veteran leadfoots Bobby Gillespie and Steve Dalton battled for the checkered flag in Saturday night's feature race at Franklin County Speedway.

Gillespie, who hails from Floyd, held off Dalton at the finish for the victory, his first of the season.

Gillespie piloted a red Chevrolet Camaro, which was new -- it didn't have any numbers on its doors.

Redeeming Life PHC will host its 12th annual benefit golf tournament, Saturday, May 19 at Willow Creek Country Club.

Thompson wins racing contest for Darlington

Wayne Thompson of Wirtz is the winner of The Franklin News-Post Racing Contest for Darlington.

Thompson chose Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth for a points total of 129.

At Talladega the week before, Wendy Muse of Rocky Mount topped all entries. She picked Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and Dale Earnhardt Jr. for 119 points.

Since another entrant had 119 points, Muse won on the tiebreaker, picking Tony Stewart for laps led.

Girls' basketball camp is set for June

The annual Franklin County girls' basketball camp is scheduled for June 11-14 at Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

The camp is for girls in grades kindergarten through eighth.

Evening sessions are from 6 to 8:30.

There is no cost to attend this camp, but enrollment is limited to 100 participants.

FERRUM -- Ferrum College will host its annual summer basketball camp June 18-21on the college campus.

Daily sessions are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in William P. Swartz Gymnasium.

The camp is for boys and girls ages 7-16.

Campers are grouped according to age, grade and ability.

Cost is $150.

Cost includes lunch.
